| The Blindness Coach |

Hello, I'm Lloyd and I specialize in coaching other blind and visually impaired adults on the way to living their absolutely best blind life.

I am passionate about people becoming competently and fearlessly blind or visually impaired and discovering their best self. With me as your coach you will find answers, develop solutions and move forward in to a life of competent blindness.

There are a vast array of resources to assist in learning the techniques necessary in daily life as a visually impaired person. The element that brings all of these skills together is your mindset, or as I call it, your "blindset." I am here to help you do the "blindfullness" work required to achieve true blind competence.

If this resonates with you as a blind or visually impaired  person, or a sighted person who loves a visually impaired person, contact me today to schedule a complementary "discovery" session.

My Story

When I woke up I had no idea where I was.

The room was impossibly dark. I heard someone to my right making noise, but when I tried to reach out to them, I found that my arms had IV's in them. I asked the person to turn on the lights.

“The lights ARE on”, I heard the person reply.

It took a second, but, I realized that I must be in a hospital and that I was completely blind.

That was in January of 2001. The next several years were a journey through confronting the ways in which my life had changed, struggling to deal with those changes, and finally moving on to a fulfilling, and much to my surprise, happy life.

The changes confronted by my old "sighted" self included the obvious:

  • no more driving,

  • no more watching TV or movies,

  • no more reading books, among others,

and the less obvious;

  • thinking about every move, so as not to run into the edge of that partially open door or knock over that glass of water, etc.

Learning to live with the drastic changes that blindness creates requires training and assistance from other people. It also requires the belief that "thinking differently" can lead the way to doing the things you thought were lost forever.

The struggle for me, and I discovered later, for many visually impaired people is dealing with the feelings of worthlessness, dependency, and loneliness, that these changes and overcoming them creates. Even though I was able to find the training in life skills that I needed to survive day to day, those feelings persisted. Fortunately, on the way, I met other visually impaired people further along in this journey who taught me how to think about my new blind life. I learned that my old sighted mindset had to be reworked and turned into what I call a proper “blindset.”

After many years of blindness and visual impairment support group meetings, extended conversations with other visually impaired people, and listening to their stories, I realized that these negative feelings are pervasive. I had them, other blind and visually impaired people had them, and because you or your loved one are on this path, I’ll bet you or your loved one, have had them, too.

If you, or someone you love, are struggling on this new journey to a fulfilling life of visual impairment, contact me. I am passionate about helping others travel this road to a life of competency and richness as a visually impaired person.
